Life insurance
Life insurance in South Florida, explained honestly
Most people are sold a policy before anyone works out what they actually need. We start the other way around: what would your family have to cover if you were not here, and what is the least expensive way to cover it. Mark leads this side of the practice, with 12+ years in life insurance.
Term or permanent
Almost every life insurance conversation starts here, and the honest answer for most families is simpler and cheaper than what they expect to hear.
- Term life — coverage for a set number of years. Far and away the cheapest way to protect a family while the children are young and the mortgage is large.
- Permanent life — coverage that does not expire and builds cash value over time. Costs considerably more for the same death benefit.
- For most working families with children at home, term does the job. We will say so.
- Permanent earns its place in specific situations — estate planning, a lifelong dependent, a business that needs to survive an owner.
- You can hold both. A term policy covering the years of maximum need, alongside a smaller permanent one, is a common and sensible shape.
How much coverage actually makes sense
Rules of thumb like “ten times your salary” are a starting point, not an answer. The real number comes from what would still need paying.
- What is left on the mortgage, and whether your family would want to stay in the home.
- What it costs to raise the children to independence, including whatever you intend for their education.
- Income replacement — how many years of your earnings the household would need to absorb the loss.
- Debts and final expenses, which people consistently underestimate.
- Minus what already exists: savings, and any coverage through your employer — which usually ends the day the job does.
About the medical exam
This is the part that stops people, and it is much less of an obstacle than it used to be. Plenty of policies now issue with no exam at all, based on a health questionnaire and the records that already exist about you.
Where an exam is required, it is usually short and can be done at your home — height, weight, blood pressure, a blood and urine sample.
Having a health condition does not automatically mean a refusal or a punishing rate. Different carriers underwrite the same condition very differently, which is exactly where an independent agent earns their place. We know which companies look kindly on what.
The one thing that genuinely matters: rates rise with age, every year, and they never come back down. The policy you keep putting off is the most expensive one you will ever buy.
Questions we get asked most
Is the coverage from my job enough?
Usually not, and it is rarely portable. Employer coverage is often one or two times salary and it typically ends when the job does — frequently at the worst possible moment. It is a good supplement and a poor foundation.
I am young and healthy. Should I wait?
Young and healthy is precisely when it is cheapest, and the price is locked for the life of a term policy. Waiting buys nothing and costs more every year.
What if I stop being able to pay?
Tell us before you miss a payment rather than after. There are usually options — reducing coverage, changing the term, adjusting the schedule — and almost all of them beat letting a policy lapse and starting again older.
Does my family pay tax on the payout?
Life insurance death benefits are generally received income-tax-free by the beneficiary. Larger estates can raise other questions, and that is a conversation to have with a tax professional.
Can I get coverage on my parents?
With their knowledge and consent, and where you have a genuine financial interest, yes. Final expense policies designed for exactly this are common and modest in size.
Do you handle this in Spanish?
Yes. The whole practice is bilingual, and life insurance paperwork is exactly where being able to ask a question in your own language matters most.
